Our materials & trims

Sustainable materials

Instead of doing as much as necessary, we aim to innovate and do as much as humanly possible - and to constantly stretch the boundaries.

Materials without compromises

Our aim is to use the most sustainable and at the same time functional materials, and to reach the “sweet spot” of true sustainability and function. Instead of doing as much as necessary, we aim to innovate and do as much as humanly possible - and to constantly stretch the boundaries. Is the material supporting the activities the piece of clothing is meant to be used for, and is it at the same time not harming our environment and health? Have the people who created this material been treated fairly?

Natural performance without plastic & toxins

Our mission is to avoid materials that shed harmful microplastics and toxic substances, and focus on using innovative natural fibers that have a high performance during athletic activities. If certain key performance features are not achievable, we will use the second most sustainable option, which depends on the use case and might be a synthetic material that is for instance compostable or has been recycled. We also want to ensure that at the end of their lifetime, our clothes can either biodegrade back to nature without leaving harmful residues, or can be recycled to new clothes or other products.

TENCEL™ Lyocell

TENCEL™ is the main material we use - all our workout shirts are made from 100% TENCEL™, and our leggings are mostly made from TENCEL™ as well. It is a lyocell fiber derived from sustainable wood sources invented by the Austrian wood fiber company Lenzing. The production doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals, and the water and environmentally harmless solvent are reused at a rate of more than 99% during production. TENCEL™ lyocell fibers are certified as biodegradable and compostable, meaning that they can fully revert back to nature, and in a relatively short amount of time depending on the environment. That's a key difference to plastics like polyester that can take centuries, or more, to decompose.

The wood pulp comes from sustainably managed trees including eucalyptus, pine, spruce and birch trees, mainly from Europe. The wood is certified according to recognized sustainability criteria, such as the FSC® and PEFC™ standards. Lenzing and Tripulse support the preservation of endangered and primeval forests. That means you can rest assured that no wood or pulp is derived from primeval forests from the Amazon Region, Canada or Russia, or from any of the other endangered rainforests in Indonesia or West Africa. The timber made use of is generated by thinning, a practice applied in sustainable foresting. That means that the timber that is unsuitable for high-grade products, such as furniture, finds a meaningful purpose in the production of botanic fibers.

Our dyed TENCEL™material is also free from harmful chemicals and Oekotex Standard 100 certified.

ROICA® V550

Instead of using regular elastane to give our tights the stretchiness they need for high performance, we use a more sustainable version instead. Roica® V550 is a compostable version of elastane and is cradle-to-cradle certified with the material health category “gold”. That means it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals and is biodegradable. After having turned every stone, with the current available materials out there, some form of stretch material needs to be added when making durable and high-performing tights. We use a special TENCEL™ composition that is knitted in a certain way to allow for more stretch, but even this was not enough to create tights where extreme mobility is needed. So that is why we are using Roica® V550, in our eyes the second most sustainable solution instead of using 100% TENCEL™.

PYRATEX® Power III

A highly innovative material combining nature, comfort and performance, made from a unique composition of Tencel lyocell and stretch.

Instead of applying chemical treatments and finishings to the fabric, the material is finished with steam in order to protect the fibers and maintain their properties.

Instead of conventional elastane, our Pro leggings and next gen sports bra include ROICA EF385 which is a recycled, toxin-free and OEKOTEX-certified elastane made from pre-consumer materials.

For this Power III fabric, it was not possible to use the biodegradable Roica v550 that we usually use in our Original leggings series and shorts. We turned every stone to make it possible, but the technology required for this technical fabric does not yet work with ROICAV550.

PYRATEX® Power III has the following certifications:

  • EU Ecolabel
  • FSC and PFSC
  • Oekotex Standard Class 1
  • REACH

Making it a top tier fabric from a sustainable and health perspective. It’s free from toxic substances, and its entire lifecycle, from raw material to production has a very low environmental impact overall.

Natural rubber & organic cotton waistbands

We use a combination of 60% certified organic cotton and 40% natural rubber for the elastic waistbands in the tights, instead of regular elastane. The organic cotton comes from Turkey, the rubber from Malaysia. Our Germany-based supplier is GOTS-certified ensuring an environmentally- and socially responsible production in all processing stages, the use of organic fibers, and no use of toxic chemicals.

Organic cotton care labels

The care labels that are attached to the inside of our products are made from organic cotton and are printed with water-based ink. Made in Portugal.

Tencel lyocell care labels

The care labels of our Pro leggings that are attached to the inside of are made from Tencel lyocell and printed with water-based ink. They are amongst others bluesign®, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and GOTS certified. Made in Portugal.

Dyes & finishing

A big part of the pollution and harmful effects of the textile industry happens during the textile dyeing and finishing stage. In this stage lots of chemicals are usually being used to achieve certain color vibrancy and functionality, such as water-resistance, anti-bacterial properties etc. As some of these chemicals can be very toxic, this is a phase that can potentially compromise on our health and wellbeing.

In order to avoid these harmful effects, we first of all choose materials that are “by nature” free from toxic chemicals and that as much as possible naturally have performance-friendly features, such as odor resistance and breathability. And for this, TENCEL™ (described in the section “ our materials”) is the perfect material. In regards to functionality, it is naturally breathable, odor resistant and has a smooth touch, without having to add any harsh finishing to achieve these features.

All our materials including the dyes and finishing are Oekotex Standard 100 certified, meaning they don’t contain any harmful chemicals. On top of that, they are REACH conform. REACH is a regulation of the EU created to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, and ensures that the substance can be safely used without harming the end customer. The dyes used are specific water-based reactive dyes that are non-harmful to human health nor the environment.

While we love the idea of plant-based dyes, there can also be substantial(environmental) challenges with these, as well as a lack of sufficient longevity which is key for a sustainable garment. We are testing grounds with these dyes but have not yet found a fully satisfying solution.

Our mission is to keep on innovating and pushing the boundaries also when it comes to using the most sustainable, health-friendly and at the same time functional dyes and finishing. So where we are at is really good, however, we believe that there is always room to keep on innovating and to becoming even better.

Water based ink prints

All our prints are made from extremely durable water-based inks which are eco- and health-friendly as they contain water instead of plastics and no harmful chemicals. They are amongst others “Organic 100 Content Standard” and GOTS certified. Made in Portugal.
